Probus Club Costa del Sol
The History of Probus.
The title PROBUS is a combination of PROfessional and Business. The Clubs started in 1966 for retired and semi-retired professional and business people with various connections, meeting once or twice a month over lunch, forming a basic fellowship on past interests. Additionally, they provide assistance, when necessary, to fellow members and the local community.
The first Probus Clubs were formed in 1966 by the Rotary Clubs of Welwyn and Caterham and the growth and interest arising from this early beginning developed rapidly throughout the United Kingdom.
At the end of 2002 there are about a thousand Probus Clubs in the UK and about five hundred in Australia and New Zealand (the South Pacific Section). Clubs have also been started in Holland, Belgium and South Africa. Similar Clubs, using a different title, exist in the USA.
Centers supplying ties, badges, regalia and general equipment for Probus Members have developed rapidly and printed directories of all UK Clubs are issued annually.
The basic purpose of a Probus Club is to provide regular gatherings of persons who, in retirement, appreciate and value opportunities to meet others in similar circumstances and interests. The emphasis is for Probus Clubs to be simple in structure, free from the constraints and obligations of service clubs and involve members in minimal costs. They are directed primarily to provide fellowship.
Activities of the Probus Clubs generally fall into one of the following categories. A weekly/fortnightly/monthly meeting for fellowship, business, discussions and guest speakers. Additional activities are held between meetings with partners.
i.e. Meals Out/Theatre/Cinema/Vocational Visits/Sports events/Weekends away etc.
Probus Membership provides self-generating goodwill, a sense of belonging and a diverse background of interests. It stimulates thought, interests and participations in activities at a time of life when horizons may be narrowing and opportunities to make new friends may be limited.

Robert Godfrey called a meeting of interested persons on Tuesday March 11th 2003.
There were 11 persons present. Bob produced a Constitution and Application Forms and it was unanimously agreed that a new Probus Club be formed and be called the “Probus Club Costa del Sol”. 10 persons then became Founder Members.
